BRAINS ARE GREEDY
On average, the human brain weighs 3–4 pounds. At a rough ratio of 1:40, the brain comprises approximately 2% of the total body mass of a human. Yet a brain consumes a surprising amount of resources: 20% of the oxygen we breathe and 20% of the calories we burn.1 Clearly, the brain is doing a lot of work, if it needs so many resources.
The brain and associated nerve centers control everything the body does, both consciously and unconsciously. We rarely notice the autonomic functioning of our involuntary body processes, such as breaking down food into useable nutrients, converting air into useable oxygen, moving nutrients and oxygen throughout the body, and maintaining body temperature. ...
