“Form follows function” has become a mantra since it was coined by the Chicago architect Louis Sullivan in his 1896 essay “The Tall Office Building Artistically Considered.” In practice, the phrase dictates that the use of a space should be the determining factor in the development of a design. Sullivan’s investment in maximizing the design of an emerging typology—the skyscraper—relies on efficiency and consistency of program to determine the form, or shape, of his structures.
