An opening or gap in a surface.

Apertures are the moments in a design where openings occur, where light passes through glass, and how air circulates in a space. Traditionally thought of as having functional value, a door to get into another space (or to close off access), a window to allow light and exterior environments into the space, or empty openings in both horizontal or vertical surfaces allow for visual access to other spaces.

The depth and material of an aperture can affect the perception of what is beyond an opening. A regular stud wall is too slight to elicit a physical response when you pass through it, but a knife edge detail or a much thicker wall assembly ...
