In December 1960, I was a freshman cadet at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado. By then, I knew how to follow orders without asking questions, and I knew that keeping military secrets was highly important. One evening in early December, the entire corps of cadets was ordered to attend a classified briefing. During that briefing we were told that there were U.S. military advisors on the ground in Vietnam helping the South Vietnamese army fight against the invading Communist North Vietnamese army under Ho Chi Minh. ...
