The blockchain is the brainchild of Satoshi Nakamoto as referenced in Chapter 1. Satoshi used two separate words, block and chain. With time, the two words have combined into a single word blockchain. Originally, blockchain was devised for bitcoin (cryptocurrency), but it has evolved much bigger since then.
