The transport properties of concrete and the equations that describe them
Abstract:
In this chapter the main transport processes that take place in concrete are described. For each process a brief introduction to the physical mechanism is developed and then the basic equations are presented. The main transport processes are pressure driven flow (controlled by the permeability), diffusion and electromigration. These processes are controlled by adsorption and driven by capillary suction, osmosis and electro-osmosis. For the process of adsorption the water-soluble and acid-soluble concentrations are discussed together with the capacity factor (or distribution ratio) which may be used to calculate them using a linear isotherm. Equations are then ...
