10.1 Introduction

We begin the second phase in our study of transport phenomena in this chapter by looking, in detail, at convective transport. All convective transport involves fluid motion and nearly every transport situation of practical importance involves convection. This is not unusual since 70% of the Earth’s surface is covered by water, 65% of our bodies are water, and the atmosphere is a gas. All these fluids are in ceaseless motion, driven by energy released deep within the Earth and energy transported from the Sun.
