Emerging issues

Abstract

In this chapter, we consider how the subject of train aerodynamics might develop in the future. Firstly, developments in testing and computational techniques are discussed, and the expectation that CFD techniques will take over from full-scale and physical model testing is challenged. A discussion of the overall drivers of change suggests the following developments.

• The need to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions will drive efforts to reduce resistance for all types of trains and also to increase the efficiency of existing rail systems through running more and faster trains on existing infrastructure, with obvious implications for train aerodynamic studies.
