42. What Should I Tweet About?
Determining what to tweet about is probably one of the most difficult parts about being on Twitter. Many people are skeptical about the service because with so many millions of users, a voice can easily get lost in the crowd.
When starting out, sometimes the best thing to do is just listen. Open up your account and figure out whom you want to follow. Check out leaders in your industry, potential competitors, and potential consumers, and then follow people with the same personal interests as you. Then, just start reading what they write. You may find that you want to respond to their comments or pass what they write off to other people to enjoy. As you start to do so, you'll find that what you're actually doing is engaging with the people you're following. As you become more comfortable, you'll gradually start to figure out what kind of content works best for you.
In general, the different types of content you can share are:
- News (current events)
- Articles about your industry
- Retweets of other content you like
- Responses to other people
- Comments about interesting things you hear or see that are relevant to your audience
When possible, it's always good to have much of your content include responses to others or personal commentary. It shows that your brand is human and responsive.
