As we established, shutter speed refers to the length of time that the camera’s shutter curtain is open, exposing the capture medium to light. Typical shutter speeds, measured in fractions of a second, would follow this range:
- 1/2000 – very fast 1/1000
- 1/500
- 1/250
- 1/125
- 1/60 – middle of the road
- 1/30
- 1/15
- 1/8
- 1/4
- 1/2 – very slow
Often, the speed is displayed without the “1/,” so you just see whole numbers, but they would be referred to as a fraction anyway. A shutter speed of 1/125th of a second might be noted as 125, but would be referred to as a 125th. ...
