Automated Order Picking and Replenishment

The first warehouses were pure storage facilities but over time as they evolved into modern distribution centers, much of their value shifted toward order fulfillment. Efficient order picking and replenishment became critical in order to maximize accuracy and throughput.

It is useful to recall Figure 2.2 in Chapter 2 that highlights different warehouse environments and technologies as they are particularly relevant to order picking and replenishment. For order picking, these business demands map to specific modes of operation and technologies as shown in Figure 6.1.
