Managing by total efficiency through the elimination of unevenness, overburden, and waste to achieve true efficiency

Managerially, Economics 101 instructs that people and organizations prioritize doing such things for which there is a reward. Therefore, encouraging the correct decisions and behavior necessitate that we align what and how we measure performance to the notion of efficiency specific to TPS.

Philosophically, we have already introduced the three efficiencies as part of the customer-focus philosophy in Chapter 2:

A table has two columns: traditional production system and Toyota production system. Row entries are as follows. Goals, what: individual efficiency, total efficiency. Means, how: forced work, eliminate waste. Results: apparent efficiency, true efficiency.
