Quite frequently, the ultimate deciding factor in what props are used is what is readily available, whether already owned by the theatre or able to be cheaply and quickly borrowed or bought. I’m always a bit curious and trepidatious when a theatre manager says, “Oh yeah, we’ve got something in the back, let me pull it out for you.” “It” is often an old starter pistol that was put in a box without being cleaned after a show they did a dozen years ago.
