News versus Noise

It was a beautiful May Sunday in Houston: a balmy 85 degrees, blue skies, and a light breeze. Houstonians knew to make the most of these relatively pleasant days before the heat of summer descended on the city. Laura had joined Rich and Peg for the morning church service, and then the three went to lunch and dined al fresco at their favorite Mexican food restaurant, Escalante’s. They filled up on chips and salsa, tacos, and enchiladas and lumbered back to the car for a restful afternoon. Rich and Peg dropped Laura off at her car at the church parking lot and headed for home.

“After a lunch like that I’m ready for a little siesta! I might just have to curl up for a nap,” Peg said. “I feel like this day was made for relaxing.”

“That would be great, but I’m afraid I won’t be able to join you,” Rich said. “Fred invited me over to watch the Astros game, and it starts in about an hour.”

“Oh, I’d forgotten about that,” Peg said. “I’m not sorry to miss that. Fred and relaxation don’t exactly go hand-in-hand.”

“Isn’t that the truth,” Rich said, shaking his head. “He isn’t that bad, though, and I don’t have so many friends that I can afford to go around turning down invitations. Besides, I haven’t seen him in months. I really sort of feel sorry for the guy.”

“Get ready. I bet Fred’s going to grill you about your retirement and financial planning,” Peg said.

“I know he will,” Rich replied. “Maybe he’ll help me figure out what not to do.”
