John Gage was the first person we ever heard talk about the network being the computer. It was the 1980s, Bob recalls, when Gage first said, “The network is the computer,” and it was a visionary aspiration back then. At that time, John Gage was the chief scientist at Sun Microsystems. (This is also when Eric Schmidt was the chief technologist at Sun—long before he went to Google as CEO and led Google’s push to create cloud-served supercomputing.)
