5. The Predictable Existential Crisis
Traditional organizations reward individual performance through a variety of mechanisms, including promotions, compensation, bonuses, and public recognition. These rewards can create a temporary sense of accomplishment in the minds of the people who receive them, and for some people they have a powerful effect on how those people perceive themselves. In the end, however, these kinds of rewards do not provide lasting motivation,1 and they provide a false foundation for professional self-esteem.
