RFC 3535 (http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc3535) is an informational RFC initiated in 2002 that captures the status of the industry in terms of network management and the requests of operation teams to networking gear manufacturers. The document highlights the shortcomings of existing technologies such as the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) and the command-line interface (CLI). It also calls for networks to be configured as a whole, and for configurations to be text based so that revision control can be easily applied to them with tools such as Apache Subversion (SVN), Mercurial, or Git.
