07 Aperture

An opening or gap in a surface.

Apertures are functional openings in a design that allow light, air, and visual access to other spaces. They include doors, windows, and empty openings in surfaces. The depth and material of an aperture can affect the perception of what lies beyond it. Apertures in exterior walls are often minimized to regulate temperature, while deep apertures for daylight provides protection and shade. Openings in ceilings and floors can create dramatic double-height spaces. These creative uses of apertures enhance visual and aural connections to adjacent spaces.
