04 Adjacency

The system for determining how spaces relate to each other.

In the predesign phase, space planning is critical to maximize flow and efficiency. Based on client conversations, various methods are used to develop adjacencies, although trial and error is often involved. Factors such as working needs, natural light, acoustic qualities, equipment access, privacy, sustainability, and maintenance are considered in assessing adjacency needs. Tools like adjacency matrices and bubble diagrams aid in visualizing and evaluating options.
