02 Acoustics

The qualities of a space that reflect or absorb sound waves.

The goal of acoustic design is to create a space that supports its intended function and the collective needs of its users. Understanding how sound works is key in achieving this. Sound waves bounce off reflective surfaces, and the time it takes for the sound energy to dissipate is known as “reverberation time” (RT). All surfaces and contents within a room affect reverberation. In rooms with hard surfaces, sound waves bounce multiple times, creating an echoey environment.

Reverberation times should be carefully considered based on the space’s usage. Designers can specify materials and products to reduce reverberation and create an acoustically comfortable range.
