CIRCLES
Implied circles are much more interesting than those that are complete and ready-made (like a clock face), though they don’t happen as often as, say, implied triangles (see pages 72–73). Here was one. The location: a Buddhist convent in Sagaing, a religious town near Mandalay in Burma. The job: a book for Thames & Hudson on sacred sites in Asia called Sacred Places. The occasion: preparations for one of the festivals in the Buddhist calendar, called Kathin, at which new robes are presented to monks—along with food. On arrival, we were shown where nuns were preparing the ceremonial meal. It’s standard procedure to explore alternative camera positions.
