Afternoon storm over the Amazon, Brazil, 1971

These are the forested banks of the Amazon River in Brazil, and even though this strip of trees is the only distinct and sharp subject in the picture, they’re about to slip out of the frame. Why? Why not divide the shot in a more ordinary way, with the banks a bit higher, where the audience might expect them? There’s more than one reason. Practically, there isn’t anything of interest in the water itself, but above there’s a tropical storm brewing, though pale and subtle.
