When you’re looking for precision and alignment, and the shape of the subject seems similar to the picture frame—or could be made similar—there’s the possibility of being clever with the edges and corners to make everything just fit. Emphasis on “just,” because this is a tricky procedure. One slip and it all falls apart if anything important actually breaks out and crosses the edge. Yes, you could crop in later to make it appear to work, but that wouldn’t really be the point, would it? To be satisfying and neat, the subject has to match the frame.
