The Outsiders originated while I was on vacation with my family in 2003. I work in a private equity firm and had been preparing for an upcoming talk at my firm’s biannual CEO conference. The idea had been to profile an exceptional chief executive and share the lessons from that individual’s career with the managers of our portfolio companies. I had chosen Henry Singleton and, in beginning the research process, had the good luck to find my way into a very talented network of second-year students at Harvard Business School, starting with Aleem Choudhry.
