Old world meets new world. In Mark Colan’s article on SOA (http://www-128.ibm.com/developerworks/webservices/library/ws-soaintro.html), he uses a great analogy to standards. In 221 B.C., Emperor Qin unified several formerly warring states into a new country, which we now call China. Perhaps one reason China has endured as a nation was Qin’s introduction of standards, which consolidated cultures and facilitated trade. Some examples of the standards they used include a standard distance for wheels on carts that enabled them to travel efficiently on any road, and a common written language that everybody could use to exchange messages (even if they did not speak the same language).
