Chapter 17

eBay’s selling fees

eBay’s selling fees are continually evolving so make sure you check the site at http://pages.ebay.com.au/help/sell/fees.html for the most up-to-date fees. The fees also vary among eBay sites so if you’re listing on a site in another country, check for local fee rates. Table 17.1 shows eBay Australia’s fee table for casual, or private, sellers. If you sell in large volume or have an eBay store, your fees will likely be different from what is listed below (see part IV for more information).

Let’s look at a practical example so you can see precisely what fees you would pay in a typical transaction. If I list a refrigerator for sale at $300 and it’s my third listing within the month, my fees will be:

$0 Insertion + (9.9% × $300) Final value + (2.4% × $300 + 30c) PayPal fees

= $0 + $29.70 + $7.20 + $0.30 = $37.20

My total eBay and PayPal fees equal 12.4 per cent of the sale price.

eBay also offers some optional features you can use to help optimise your sales potential (remember, it’s free to add up to 12 photographs per listing). You can pay the following optional feature fees:

• Subtitle ($2). Add a subtitle to appear in the search results pages to include additional information for your buyers. Note that subtitle keywords are not referenced in an eBay search.

• Add Buy it now price to an auction ...
