Background

Sultan Ahmad Shah founded the city of Ahmedabad in 1411 AD, as a walled city on the banks of the Sabarmati River; the commercial capital of the state Gujarat is now the seventh largest in India and the largest city in the state. With a population of six million inhabitants (2001), Ahmedabad covers an area of 466 square kilometers. The city faces many challenges that arise predominantly in maintaining the city’s contribution to the state’s growth.
