It’s These Three Things That Create Soft Backgrounds
It’s not just the f-stop, it’s getting in tight on your subject, getting them away from the background, and the f-stop. In fact, if I had to choose between zooming in tight or using a low-numbered f-stop to create a soft, blurry background, I’d go with the zooming. Here’s why: I can take a zoom lens, zoom in tight on my subject at f/5.6 or f/6.3, and still get a nice soft background, as long as the background they’re standing in front of isn’t right up against my subject.
