Up to now, all of the synthesis formats discussed in this book have been stand-alone, concrete formats that follow a predictable path and feature set rules and guidelines pertaining to how they are designed. This chapter introduces synthesis formats that do not necessarily follow such a rigid structure. The landscape that physical modeling, emulation, and combination synthesizers exist in is murky at best.
