SMB/CIFS for Microsoft-Style Printer Sharing
The SMB/CIFS networking protocols include support for printing as well as for file sharing. In fact, from a networking point of view printer sharing is a subset of file sharing. In printer sharing, the client sends a file (the printer data) to the server, along with an indication of the printer to which that file should be sent. This action is essentially identical to saving a file to a shared directory, except that after the file is received, the server sends it to a printer rather than saving it to disk—and in practice, sending a file to a printer usually involves temporarily saving it to disk in a printer queue directory.
