At this point, it is important to distinguish between developmental and performance coaching, the former being the focus of this book. In developmental coaching, the learning and development of the person being coached is the primary driver of the coaching. In performance coaching, the primary drivers are organizational goals, and the coaching aims to make the client a more effective contributor to those goals. Performance coaching is often informed by some form of gap analysis, 360-degree feedback, or another assessment of competencies that the organization considers important.
