Chapter 13 First-generation student mentoring programs
Introduction
Like alumni/industry mentoring programs described in Chapter 12 there is great interest in first-generation (FG) mentoring programs. Support for FG students is not new, although it may be a more familiar concept in North America. In the United States, the Morrill Act of 1862 provided land-grants that established public universities for students who could not afford to attend private universities. These students focused on the agricultural and mechanical arts and were often the first people in their families to receive a university education.
