WE OFTEN HEAR PEOPLE SAY, “Let's get out of the box,” but this is difficult advice to follow when you don't know what the parameters of the box might be. Sure, our thinking must be constrained in some manner, but how? Category Expansion offers you a systematic way to identify the parameters of your current mental box and then seek new and different boxes, or at least different perspectives on the current box. It is especially useful in Step 1 of the creative process (see Chapter 3 for details).
