LEON FESTINGER: COGNITIVE DISSONANCE
Use this when you want to understand why it’s difficult to change someone with strong convictions.
Festinger suggested that people continually seek to bring order or meaning to their learning by developing routines and opinions that may give rise to irrational and sometimes maladaptive behaviour. When these routines are disrupted or opinions are contradicted, the individual starts to feel uncomfortable: a state that Festinger referred to as cognitive dissonance. This can be depicted as:
