INTRODUCTION
SETTING FREE THE CEO (WHY A BUSINESS IS LIKE A BOWLINE KNOT)
As I write this introduction I've just finished a staff meeting under an 85-degree sun in the Caribbean, sitting on the deck of my 50-foot sailboat. My staff participated from multiple locations around the United States. The staff meeting was held via video conferencing; after chatting about where I was at the moment, and the need to move the computer's web camera around for a 360-degree view so everyone could see the beautiful surroundings, we got down to business.
This was not some emergency staff meeting that interrupted my family vacation. It was a scheduled check-in that I performed regularly during my two-and-a-half-year trip sailing around the globe with my wife and three children. We live together on the sailboat, working, exploring, and learning about the world. I'm the owner of a $3 million professional services firm and I am spending quality time with my family that few working parents are able to experience. Also, I am living one of my life's dreams, to sail around the globe, and I am getting to do it before I retire. All this, and I still run my business, Navigoe, LLC, that I created and enjoy immensely.
