3 Lens mechanisms

3.1 What’s in a lens?

The earliest photographic lenses were simply discs of glass in metal frames or tubes. But today’s lenses are a fine blend of optics (light-focusing glass), electronics (computers and circuits), and mechanisms (rotating cylinders, electric motors), all housed in a metal or plastic barrel.

This chapter discusses the electronics and mechanisms that make up a modern camera lens. These can be quite complex, as this photograph of the internal components of a single Canon 70-200 4L lens demonstrates.
