Cover Our handsome cover bird is Petrie, a spectacled owl. Pulsatrix perspicillata is a species resident to Central and South America, where it lives in dense tropical forests. The fine hairlike feathers surrounding its beak are known as filoplumes, and are essentially sensory devices like the whiskers on a cat. Despite possessing incredible low-light vision, owls are quite nearsighted and rely on these feathers as feelers. Petrie hails from the Birds of Prey Centre in Bedfordshire, England.
