Seventeen
Adam expected to see some other people out in the park on a Friday as the weekend approached, so he almost did not recognize the figure of the person standing in the path leading to his boulder. He was dressed in loose khaki shorts, a black T-shirt, climbing shoes, and a bright blue climbing helmet, with silky black hair curling out the back.
As he came closer, the man turned to face him.
“A good day for climbing?”
They both scampered up the slight slope of the rock table to the base of the boulder. Adam reached out and clasped A.J.’s upper arm.
“No new lessons today, okay?” Adam asked. “I just want to climb.”
