The editing of this volume has consumed much of my professional life for the past couple of years, but it has been a labor of love. Many thanks to general editor Anghy Valdivia for inviting me to take this on, and to Sharon Mazzarella for recommending me for the job. It has been an absolute pleasure to envision the state of the field, extend requests for chapters to scholars whose work I have long admired, and watch the project take shape into an authoritative and innovative accounting of the media effects tradition. The authority and innovation – which I hope the reader will agree are consistent themes – stem from the chapter authors themselves, to whom I extend my gratitude for their outstanding contributions.
