Every organization needs to make ethical behavior a part of its culture, starting at the executive level and cascading down throughout every area of the organization. They must establish ethical policies and communicate them in writing to every employee so there is no question or doubt concerning what the organization’s position is and what it expects of its workers.
However, policies are not enough: They need to be observed and enforced consistently by everyone—including senior leaders, owners, and board members. Every individual must be held accountable for their actions, and there must be penalties and consequences for non-compliance.
