Introduction

In chapter two we considered excellence in theory. We discussed the conceptual-empirical foundations of In Search of Excellence, and we offered reflections on the manner in which Peters and Waterman (1982) developed and refined the analytical framework erected to advance the excellence project. Going beyond the limitations of the conventional critiques however we have located In Search of Excellence within the broader context of its formation. Thus, we have examined the social-political processes within and beyond McKinsey and Co, which shaped the constitution and elaboration of In Search of Excellence.
