Foreword

Having spent 30 years in the IT infrastructure field, I want to consider myself immune to hype. That may be so much wishful thinking, because I’ve definitely proven to be susceptible to hype about edge computing. I’m even guilty of hyping the paradigm myself. However, like all hypers, I believe my own story.

Edge computing is experiencing the sort of jagged, unpredictable growth that typifies new technologies with a maddeningly unclear mix of use cases. Yet, I think even the calmest in my cohort would agree that edge computing is going to be big, perhaps extremely big. How big will the sector be? When will this growth occur? What will be the drivers of growth? These matters are far from settled or obvious.
