Conceptualizing the Edge Data Center

What is an edge data center? Surprisingly, or perhaps not surprisingly, a definition of this basic unit of edge computing has been difficult to establish. For some stakeholders, an edge data center must be a miniature replica of a hyperscale facility, with all of the same functionality. For others, a server in a closet qualifies as an edge data center. Are both definitions acceptable? I’m going to attempt to resolve this conflict. There’s no argument quite like the argument between tech professionals nerding out on their favorite paradigms, but I’m a peacemaker.
