WHAT IS STYLE?

The term style is one of the most often used and least understood terms in theatre. It is further confused by the fact that it can refer to many different concepts. Style and genre are often used interchangeably. A style groups together works of art based on similar conventions. Think of style like a mailbox in a mailroom. Each mailbox is assigned to an individual based on assumed needs. When a letter arrives addressed to “John Smith,” it is placed in the mailbox labeled “John Smith.” When a letter arrives for “Mr. Smith,” since there is only one box labeled “Smith,” an assumption is made to place it in the “John Smith” mailbox.
