You Might Have to “Bounce It”
If you’re someplace where you can’t use a diffuser or a softbox, but still want nice, soft light, try bouncing it off the ceiling. When the light hits the ceiling, it spreads big time, which softens it, so when it comes back down on your subject, it’s softer and nicer. It’s not as good or directional as using a softbox, so you’ll only do this when you can’t use one. Just tilt your flash head up toward the ceiling, and it bounces and reflects back down onto your subject. Because the light is coming from above, the shadows appear on the floor behind your subject, instead of on the wall behind them, which is a plus. ...
