EVEN WITHOUT THE GIN
The tonic note and chord (I = major; i = minor) are the tonal center, and are heard more often in a musical piece than any other. In the next ring out, we have the V, or dominant chord, and the VII, or leading tone chord. It’s called “leading tone” because it leads up to the tonic (on eight this time) again.
