CHAPTER
SELECTING YOUR DOMAIN NAME
5.1. What Is a Domain Name?
Domain names are a focal point for online communications. Each domain name is a routing address for locating a website or delivering email on the internet. Website addresses are also often referred to as url’s which is an acronym for uniform resource locator.
Computers communicate through numbers. You get routed to a website because there is a unique series of numbers associated with each website. The series of numbers is called an internet protocol address, or ip address for short, and is expressed as four groups of numbers separated by periods—such as 123.45.78.90.
