Choices
Making choices of what elements to put onstage and deciding what they will communicate to the audience is the core of the designer’s work. To make these choices he needs to clearly define for himself the qualities he finds in the play.
Your work with the text and your research will provide much information to ponder. You must now come up with a fairly concise idea as to how you will approach your design.
There are several terms that can be used for this idea.
The term concept brings with it some baggage, having often been used to describe an idea of a director or designer that can seem to be laid on the play like a great weight. It forces the play into a mold that restricts it. This is, of course, unfair. ...
