Wang Xiuyan was born in 1955 in the city of Benxi, in Liaoning province, but spent her childhood and adolescence in Keerqin, in Inner Mongolia, where her father—a military man working in a factory—was relocated. Her mother had no problem relocating as she was a housewife. Wang Xiuyan grew up with her two sisters and brother (all younger than her) and remained in Keerqin until she was 17 years old, when she was sent to Changbaishan, in Jiling province, to teach Mandarin.
