Introduction
This chapter provides a brief introduction to the history and to each of the generations of the cellular system, explaining their main features, differences, advantages, and disadvantages. It also discusses how the cellular market has developed in both Europe and the United States, taking account of services, operators, transmission rates, and user equipment. Also, as an introduction to the second and later generations of cellular systems, the basic principles of multiple-access techniques are described.
